The Brief

Custom magazine design for an independent publisher

Fisher Magazine is a lifestyle publication produced for a small, exclusive residential community in Miami, a readership defined by address rather than circulation numbers. The brief covered full art direction, graphic design, and print management for the Winter issue: cover, fashion story, wish list, culture and art, jewelry, and the community’s social calendar.

Our editorial design approach brings structure and visual consistency to diverse content, combining typography, layout, imagery, and art direction into a cohesive publication. For Fisher Magazine, we developed a refined visual language across the issue, giving each section its own character while maintaining a consistent and sophisticated overall experience.

The Approach

A visual system built to cover a whole way of life

A single issue of Fisher Magazine moves across fashion, a curated wish list of objects, culture and art, jewelry, and the community’s social scenes. Art direction had to give each section its own rhythm, a fashion story reads differently to a jewelry spread, while keeping one consistent visual language across the whole issue, so the magazine reads as a single considered object rather than a stitched-together collection of sections.

Print management as part of the design, not after it

Editorial design for print carries decisions that never surface in a digital layout: paper stock, colour accuracy from screen to press, how a spread folds across the gutter. Managing that production process alongside the graphic design meant the finished issue matched the layout as intended, not an approximation of it.

Magazine layout design for a discerning reader

Without a newsstand cover to win attention, the pressure in this kind of magazine design shifts entirely to the reading experience itself. Typography, white space and image scale were treated with the same rigour a design agency would bring to a luxury brand identity, because for Fisher Magazine’s readers, that level of care is the baseline, not a differentiator.

The Result

The Winter issue delivered a complete editorial package, cover to print-ready file, that gives Fisher Magazine a visual identity as considered as the community it serves. Art direction, layout design and print management came together as one process rather than three handoffs, so the finished issue reads exactly as designed, on paper as well as on screen.

For any independent publisher or brand building a magazine around a specific, exacting audience, that consistency is the whole brief: nothing in the design should read as less considered than the life it’s documenting.
